Het raakt me diep.

September 4: from Ullastrell to Esparreguera ( about 12 kilometers; for me by taxi)
OK, it’s already quite remarkable that I didn’t receive marching orders to get my ass back home forthwith. My dear spouse understood of course that I requested Jan and Monique to join me and that I couldn’t leave them. That would have been a cowardly retreat as well! But I do decide to follow doctor’s orders and take a day off.
Jan and Monique start early on the short stage of about 13 km., and I do whatever is necessary to make sure that the Albergue is as impeccable as before, visit the pharmacy to buy bandages and other miserable items and call a taxi. Upon arrival in Esparreguera, I settle myself on a terrace with a cortado and agua con gas.
Then I receive the news that a dear friend has passed. Cees de Geus, same year at Leiden Unite and we lived in the same student house for a few years. One of the nicest persons I met in my life. Gone. I guess I’m at an age where this will happen more frequently as time goes by.
On the terrace I’m a bit of an attraction; people see my backpack and want to know what happened and the waitress spontaneously brings me a bag with ice cubes to reduce the swelling in my face. So sweet!
When Jan and Monique arrive it becomes quite clear that my decision not to partake in today’s walk was a wise one. It was a tough descent!
We take refuge in Hostal Cal Duran (since 1601) and when we read that it ranks number 4 out of 35 restaurants in Esparreguera, we decide to have dinner there too. It was excellent!
Tomorrow’s stage includes the climb to Montserrat. The stage is short, only 11.8 km, but has a reputation of being super tough. The first 5 km to Collbató are flat but then there is the steep climb to the Monastery of Montserrat. Let’s see what tomorrow brings!
