Gelukkig was Monique met me mee.

September 3, from San Cugat to Ullastrell (approx. 20 km)

Sleeping in until 6:20 am today. At 7:15 the taxi arrives to take us to the point where Jan left the Camino yesterday. This shortens our stage a bit. There’s a coffee joint with superb coffee and an impressive assortment of croissant and other delicacies. So we enjoy our cortado and buy supplies for the day. It’s a beautiful day again and when we start we are enjoying a mild 17 degrees. Temperatures rise pretty quickly to 25 degrees and in the afternoon we are treated to 33 degrees.

The word is tranquilo, tranquilo and to stay hydrated. The paths are broad and very accessible. Quite different from yesterday! It goes up quite steeply and then down to Les Fonts which we reach after 8 kilometers. We treat ourselves to cool drinks (in my case Clara con Lemon – thanks, Martinka!). Upon leaving Les Fonts, the path goes up very, very steeply. It’s very hot and there is precious little shadow. When one of us needs a short  break in the shade the caravan comes to a halt. When I refer to one of us, this does not include Jan. He’s an incredible indestructible steam locomotive!

A few kilometers before Ullastrell it goes down into a residential area and then the arrows point towards a fully overgrown path. This can’t be right, but after checking all our apps it becomes clear that this is it. We struggle through the bushes and at a certain point we had to take off our backpacks to crawl on all fours underneath a fallen tree.

The problem is that you have to look ahead to avoid being knocked out by low branches and look down at the same time to avoid stumbling over conspiring rocks, tree stumps or roots. Jan calls this type of path bramble alleys. Not without reason, there are blackberry bushes and brambles everywhere. The problem is that they grow roots which extend to the other side of the path and then go underground again. It is as if someone stretched a piano wire from one side of the path to the other. I managed to avoid most of them, except one…….when walking with trekking poles you can’t break your fall. So when I was tripped by the bramble piano wire, I just fell head first onto the ground. I knew instantly that this was not OK. When I collected myself, I couldn’t see with my left eye because it was full of blood. No more gruesome details; the photo says it all. Luckily I was not alone. It was a scene from the MASH television series! Jan and Monique jumped into action with their first aid kit and cleaned me up as best as possible. After their loving care, there were still 4 kilometers to go to Ullastrell. Of course I managed but under the circumstances I would have preferred a shorter distance.

It was 4 pm when we arrived in Ullastrell; a bit early for a gin&tonic, but what the hell! The pharmacist in the village immediately called a taxi for me. He looked at my beaten face but decided that I needed to go to the hospital. So onwards to Terrassa. And then the long wait begins. Luckily Monique accompanied me to the hospital. As they were eyeing Monique suspiciously, I had to explain that I wasn’t a victim of domestic violence and that Monique had not beaten me up. Long story short: 6 stitched in my forehead and 2 stitches under my eye.  X-rays of my head indicated that everything was OK or at least not worse than before.

After 3 hours we headed back to Ullastrell. Luckily we had beds in the albergue. It’s a nice albergue, particularly if there are no other pilgrims. Another stroke of luck: we could still have dinner in a very nice restaurant,

In the hospital they found my question whether I could walk the Camino tomorrow quite hilarious. The checked the X-rays again to make sure they hadn’t overlooked serious brain damage and insisted that I would take a day off. I decided to comply.
