Omdat de weersverwachting niet bijster goed is en er regenkans voor de middag wordt aangegeven, vroeg op pad voor de 22 kilometer van La Gineta naar La Roda. Er stopt vandaag vanuit Albacete één trein in La Gineta maar dat is pas in de middag. Dus met een taxi naar La Gineta en vandaar op pad naar La Roda. Ook vandaag is de A-31 nooit ver weg, helaas. De vegetatie is wel iets gevarieerder dan gisteren. Wijngaarden (dat geeft mij altijd een prettig gevoel!) en zelfs wat fruitbomen. Een enkele verlaten boerderij, maar geen enkel levend wezen.
Er staan bordjes dat dit een oude Romeinse route is, de Camino Rural de Romanos. Toch een leuk idee! Na circa 4 uur lopen kom ik bij het kanaal Tajo Segura, dat water van de Taag en een aantal stuwmeren naar droge gebieden, met name in La Mancha, brengt. Het kanaal is bijna 300 kilometer lang en is één van de grootste waterprojecten van Spanje. De aanleg startte in 1969.
Zoals ik al zei, geen enkel levend wezen. Dus wie de eenzaamheid en introspectie zoekt, kan ik de Camino de Levante zonder aarzeling aanbevelen. Tegen 15:00 uur loop ik La Roda binnen en krijg bij hotel La Flor de La Mancha een wonderschone kamer; Spaanser kan niet. Bij de receptie staat een toreador outfit. Het zou me vast goed staan, maar na een korte overpeinzing wijs ik het concept, om in dit pak verder te lopen, van de hand. Het hele hotel is nog erg gericht op het stierenvechten, lijkt het.
Ik loop nog even het dorpje in om La Iglesia de El Salvador o de la Transfiguración te bezoeken. Dit kerkje staat op de lijst van Bien de Interés Cultural, dus vast de moeite waard. Helaas, ook deze kerk is dicht. Wat is dat toch? Hoe denkt de Kerk zieltjes te winnen als alle kerkdeuren hermetisch gesloten zijn? Ook weer geen kans om een mooi Camino stempel te scoren! De meeste stempels in mijn Credenciál zijn van cafés!
I’m out early for my walk to La Roda, because the weather forecast is not very favorable, with chances of rain for the afternoon. Since the only train from Albacete, which will stop in La Gineta today, runs in the afternoon, I take a taxi to La Gineta.
Also today, the A-31 is never far away, unfortunately. However, the vegetation is more diverse than yesterday. Vineyards (which always make me happy) and even orchards. A few abandoned farms, but not a living soul to be seen.
There are signs indicating that this is also an ancient Roman route, the Camino Rural de Romanos, which is a nice thought. After about 4 hours I cross the Tajo Segura canal, which brings water from the Tagus River and some reservoirs to dry areas, including La Mancha. The Canal is about 300 kilometers long and is one of the major hydraulic engineering projects in Spain. Construction started in 1969.
As I said, not a living soul to be seen. So, if you’re looking for solitude and introspection, the Camino de Levante is highly recommended!
It’s around 3 p.m. when I arrive at my hotel, La Flor de La Mancha and get the keys to a great room, furnished in typical Spanish style. In the reception area there is a toreador outfit. I’m sure I would look good in it, but after having given it some thought I decide against continuing my Camino in this outfit. It would seem the entire hotel is bullfighting focused.
Then I go into the village to visit the Iglesia de El Salvador o de la Transfiguración, which is on the list of Bien de Interés Cultural, so definitely worth the detour. Of course it’s closed. I really don’t understand why all churches I want to visit are closed hermetically. If the Church wants to gain souls, why are all the churches closed?
For me also a missed opportunity to score a really nice stamp in my Credenciál! Most of my stamps are from bars!
