Vandaag hebben we een rustdag, un dia de descanso, in Astorga. Ik ben tijdens eerdere Camino’s al een paar keer in Astorga geweest en voel niet zo’n behoefte aan veel activiteit, maar adviseer Martinka toch vooral El Palacio Episcopal en de kathedraal te gaan bezichtigen. Het Palacio Episcopal is van de hand van Antoni Gaudí en is gebouwd tussen 1889 en 1913 (vrij snel als je bedenkt dat met de bouw van de Sagrada Familia in Barcelona in 1882 werd begonnen en met nog bezig is) en is één van de drie gebouwen van Gaudí buiten Catalonië. Het is nu primair een museum voor religieuze kunst genaamd Museo de los Caminos. De kathedraal stamt uit 1471, maar staat binnen de muren van de Romaanse voorgangers uit de 11e tot 13e eeuw. Martinka is vroeg uit de veren en woont de mis in de kathedraal bij en gaat vervolgens langdurig naar het Palacio Episcopal, alwaar zij enkele duizenden foto’s maakt. Alle foto’s van vandaag zijn door Martinka gemaakt; zij heeft een goed oog!
Ik zit hoofdzakelijk op het terras naast de kathedraal, drink enkel cortado’s en schrijf mijn blog voor deze website. We lunchen op het Plaza Mayor en gaan daarna samen nog de kathedraal bezoeken waar ik als niet-gelovige een kaarsje brand voor mijn zwager Carel. Het is een rustdag, maar de benen en de voeten zijn rusteloos en trappelen van ongeduld om weer op pad te gaan. OK, morgen gaan we door naar Rabanal del Camino. De weersverwachtingen zijn weliswaar matig tot slecht, maar het vooruitzicht om weer de Camino op te mogen is aantrekkelijk!

Today we are having a day off, un dia de descanso, in Astorga. I’ve been in Astorga a few times on previous Caminos and I don’t feel the burning desire for a lot of activity, but I advise Martinka to visit the Palacio Episcopal and the cathedral. The Palacio Episcopal was built by Antoni Gaudí between 1889 en 1913 (quite quick considering that the construction of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona was started in 1882 and that they’re still working on it) and is one of only three buildings of Gaudí outside Catalonia. It’s now primarily a museum for religious art and named Museo de los Caminos. The cathedral is of 1471, but is located within the walls of its Romanesque predecessors of the 11th to 13th century. Martinka is up early and attends mass in the cathedral followed by an extended visit to the Palacio Episcopal where she makes a few thousand photos. All photos in today’s blog are made by Martinka; she has such a good eye!
My main morning activity is drinking a couple of cortados while writing on my blog. We have lunch on the Plaza Mayor and visit the cathedral together where I, as non-believer, burn a candle for my brother in law Carel. Although it is a day off, our legs and feet are restless and are trembling with impatience to get back on the Camino. OK, tomorrow we will be heading for Rabanal del Camino. The weather forecast isn’t very favorable but the perspective to return to the Camino is very attractive!
